A question.
Not, "What have I forgotten?" which would be silly because I haven't actually started packing yet,
But "What WILL I forget?" the answer to which might save me some time. Or discomfort.

So, dear flist, while I go cut the labels off the new rucksack and start packing,
"What will I forget?"

Bug spray!
Earplugs.
Antiseptic hand gel.
Rubber door wedge (if there's a possibility of visiting anywhere a bit dodgy).
Rehydration sachets.
Torch.

My problem is that when I forget to pack, it's usually an entire category, causing me to arrive at my destination with no socks or something.

Things to bring:

Flashlight
Zip-lock bags
String bag for laundry or shopping
Swimsuit
Antiperspirant
Insect repellent
Anti-itch cream
Small towel
Mints

also if you're in any of the Souks in Morocco and *especially* in Fez and Marrakesh be very very careful about pickpockets, take all the usual precautions then do them twice over.
Spare currency, US dollars still talk in North Africa - well, they did in 2005 when I was last there
Driving license and whatever else you need to hire a car out there.
SUNGLASSES
A hat, you'll need it for the sun.
Pants are definitely a good idea :)

What I had was a concealed pocket inside the lining of my usual pockets. Very useful. Especially in Djemaa el Fna, where I actually caught a child trying to liberate my wallet.

I think you're going to leave about 20 years behind. Don't panic, because you'll realise you don't need them at all, and the load will be much lighter without them.

You'll walk taller, party harder, laugh louder, and bond with your lad.

Enjoy being without them. Unfortunately, when you get home you'll find them hiding under the bed where they fell when you were packing. But don't worry, because you'll have discovered you don't really have to wear them all the time, and can put them in the wardrobe and only get them out when needed.

:D

USB flashdrive containing various stuff you deem essential or handy, none of which can be used for ill deeds against you. Passport scans, itineraries, etc.
Webspace somewhere that is similarly equipped.
If you are checking email then paranoid security is reasonably trivial - forward all email to a new account and cancel forwards when you're back and delete/forget that account.
Check what you have on you now and have a match in your rucksack. Clothes, etc. If destination permits favour plastic over cash.
Don't be prepared for everything, be able to be prepared for everything with minimal notice.
Water is nice. Especially if you plan to venture away from taps.

And, of course, the little black dress.

As you're flying check what has to be checked in, then make sure you have:
change of clothes
sunscreen - Boots do nifty little packs which meet the regs
sunglasses
sunhat
all cash and copies of essential travel papers with notes of insurance company and bank details somewhere handy (see next point)
in a carry on bag or on your person so you can survive until the airline finds your luggage or you buy the new stuff
