Laissez le Bon Temps Roulez
Or words to that effect. Was dragged off to a dancing club last night, very much against my inclination of the day, by my friend Paul. Ceroc, according to my sparkly new membership card. Much to my surprise, I had a great time. I’ve nothing against dancing (just the reverse - it’s on my list of things to do more of this year. Well it would be if I had a list) I just didn’t feel like going out last night. But, hey, you got to fake it until you make it, and I made myself put on a clean shirt and an inadvisably tight pair of trousers, and Paul gave me a lift into Sauchiehall Street. I guess these things must run on the same sort of lines no matter the type or the venue. It started with a warm up, which I mostly missed, and then half an hour or so of a beginners’ lesson. We were taken through three moves, and then taken through them again. And again. And again. Not as dull as it sounds. For one thing, there was music, for another, your partner changed at random between repetitions. This was pretty distracting for me, though. I should have been concentrating on the moves, and instead I was being sociable. After that half hour, the beginners (there were about 10 of us) were herded off to the side, for small group instruction. And after that, we joined back in with the advanced types, who were off in a free-styling world of their own by then.
I have to say, I wasn’t the most graceful thing out on the dance floor. But I only kicked one person, and I wasn’t even dancing with her. I got enough fun out of it that I’ll probably give it another chance next week, and see if it becomes something that I don’t need to fake. Let’s face it, it got me out on a dark night, and put a smile on my face. And you can’t say fairer than that.
