Films and Tag and Stuff
May. 16th, 2005 12:08 pmThanks Frankie, since I get to think about films this lunchtime instead of how depressed I am to be back in Glasgow (which is not to diss my home town, but the work I was doing in London went disappointingly and prematurely pear-shaped
1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video:
Um. Lots. Not as many as I used to when I was running three houses, since some of them are in storage now. More than 100? Less than 200?
2) The last film I bought:
I'm doing the Amazon DVD rental thing, which is cutting down on how much I buy thank goodness. Last was the Steve Earle "Just an American Boy" concert movie, I think
3) The last film I watched:
A Fistful of Dynamite on Saturday night. It's one of the darkest of the Leone movies, with a great performance from James Coburn (a personal favourite of mine).
4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me
Casablanca, obviously, although The Big Sleep and the Maltease Falcon are also big favourites.
Can I have High Society and the Philadelphia Story as one choice? Please? Two sides of the same coin, smart, funny films that never try to be more than brilliant entertainment
The Princess Bride, because it is as clever as William Goldman can be (which is very clever indeed), has Swordfighting, Giants, Miracle Men, Evil Counts and, of course, True Love. Everyone should see it, and it is the second best source of film quotes after Casablanca.
Manhattan or Annie Hall. Hard to split, but if you made me I'd go for Manhattan because of the gorgeous black and white cinematography and the Gershwin. But I still think the opening of Annie Hall is the best and most depressing opening for a comedy ever.
I know I'll come up with another 5 in about three minutes, but the other will have to be Duck Soup by the Marx Brothers - genius surfing on the catastrophe curve.
...5) Tag 5 people and have them put this in their journal:well that's not going to happen since I doin't know 5 people on Live Journal!
