To Slough

It's been a while since I've been here. It's been about 15years, and I swear, the place has gone downhill. Which is fairly depressing, since even then I agreed with Betjeman's enjoinder for the gentle bombs to fall here. I strolled along the high street at lunchtime, and found nothing but fried chicken shops and the same department stores that anchor every other high street. When I say that there's nothing that would draw me away from a staff canteen, you can see my problem.

I'm not going to write here about the job I've come down to do, except to say that the project has been underway for long enough for the key people working on it to get frazzled, and it still has a series of pretty high hurdles to get over before it delivers. Somehow I've managed to arrange three nights out on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday which rest on me getting out of the office around six - well, it's 6.15 now, and people are starting to talk about sending out for food. Last night I left just before 7, and there were plenty of people still around. It might make sense for me to be doing this remotely.

On other fronts, I'm quite cheery. It does feel, though, that just as I've rebooted my life in Scotland, I'm spending less time there. I'm going to have to do some serious thinking about how and whether I spend more time back up North again, especially as the weather gets nicer, and the islands more tempting. Also, the Kilberry Inn opens in a couple of weeks, and I have the feeling I should be there. And it's my birthday next week (numerically, this birthday and this year are quite intruiging - 7s have always been milestone years, and this time I'm going to be 7 squared).

Time for me to hit the road, I think. I'm not contributing anything by being here, and even though there's nothing particular to draw me back to the hotel, there's a Celtic match on tonight, and I'd rather watch that than sit in a window-less room.
