f4f3: (consumer whore)

Ten working days till I get paid...

I'd been intending to make an iPhone my one unnecessary purchase for July. But now Apple have gone ahead and announced a new version (not sure I like it as much as the original, but will wait till I see it in the metal, um, plastic) and 02 are probably going to make it a cheap/free upgrade, so I NEED to make another purchase to fill the gaping void in my consumerism. (My frvolous purchase for August will be fencing gear - I've a starter pack all picked out, and will be canvassing fencing folk for their opinions nearer the time).

The Macbook, bless its little cotton socks, is not a great games machine, and I haven't had a console for more than two years. I can't say I've missed having one, but, hey, all the cool kids are doing it. The new Gran Tourismo is coming on Playstation, and I've played every other version. Many friends have taken to waving small plastic objects about, and talking about being Wii-fit. I fear and honour these folk. And the X-Box looks really cool, but is made by Microsoft and breaks down a lot.

OTOH, I have a chance to buy a pair of very good indeed floor-standing speakers, at a knock down price, which sound very good indeed. I listen to music most days, and for the first time in ages I have a room with the acoustics to do a good system justice. I do have a reasonable pair of speakers now, but they could easily be pressed into service elsewhere (even, I have just realised, as rears in a very nice surround system. If I can get wireless adapters for them).

In the past, I'd just have bought both. I may still do that. But since the Internets have wisdom...

Well, the speakers are just an everyday essential.

The Wii is great fun, but I'm not totally sure we've got the use out of it. Really enjoyable, though, and you can play together. :-)

I'm old skool I guess, just not a gamer. Wii comes closest to being a game I would actually play, but it appears to be all in the wrist, which is where the computer is already crippling me.

So, speakers. Which will still be a nice enhancement to any gaming platform you eventually purchase, so they're like a meta-buy!

I'm sensing a movement shaping up here...

SPEAKERS!

Guess why? ;)

Because you think they should be cluttering up my lounge, not yours?

Possibly, possibly... =P

What did I say about encouraging him?

That it was a really good idea and she should do it whenever possible?

Hey, I have a bet with myself as to how much of our flat I can dump into yours. You have acres of space! ;)

We won't have acres of space for much longer if you guys keep on giving us your cast off technology!

It isn't cast-off, it's pre-loved...

Actually they're in Strawberry Field, and have been since I disconnected them and thus they're really only in my way. But still. Buy the speakers. They're great!

[identity profile] unblinkered.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I *was* going to suggest you spend the money on showering me with beautiful gifts, but then I realised that you're talking about "unnecessary purchases" so I don't need to worry. ;)

No x-box, though...I quite like our Microsh*te-free status!

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a factor, although not as much as its tendency to stop working...

[identity profile] psychochicken.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're buying a console it has to be the Wee. No questions.

[identity profile] psychochicken.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously the speakers... ;)

The Kefs will make very fine front speakers in a 5.1 set up. Indeed Kef do sell a Q-series 5.1 setup which features Q3's as the front two. These are the model up.

Don't. Encourage. Him!!!

*weeps*

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm being convinced....

[identity profile] victoria7.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I chose the Wii, because I want one! :-D

[identity profile] deililly.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted the wii (you have the space for really good arm waving!) but I reckon you should look at the iphone first and if the new cheep version stinks you should go buy the nicer one.

Not that you will mind you (well you might but you likely will do both :P) but there is my 2pence :P
