Thoughts on Seeing "Wings of Desire" for the first time...

"I wish that you loved me
The way that I love you
I wish I had Angels
Who sang in my dreams
If wishes were changes
We'd all live in roses
And there wouldn't be children
Who cried in their sleep

He wishes I loved him
The way that I love you
If wishes were changes
I'd dry all his tears
If wishes were changes
I'd make him my anchor
He'd be my Angel
Who sang through the years

So long to the blue days of wishing
If wishes were changes
There'd be no goodbyes
So long to the heart I have given
Cuz wishing won't bring back
The love in your eyes

I wish that I had your
Wings of desire
I wish I had seen you
As I see you now
I wouldn't feel sorrow
You've left here inside me
But, wishing won't change
Right from wrong for you now
"

Unfortunately Nanci Griffith beat me to them...

I didn't know you were a Nanci Griffith fan (but on reflection, I am not at all surprised).

I had a five year span when I listened to her daily... I might go dig out one of her albums tonight.

I saw her at one of the Mayday concerts on Glasgow Green, when she was touring "Storms" and was a big fan all the way through the 90's. I must have seen her play three or four times. I love the strength in her songs, and her choice of covers and collaborators.

In my unchanging top three of all time, Der Himmel Über Berlin splits the second place with Dead Man. I love that film so much.

I think I may have to learn German. The images were beautiful, but I think the sub-titles let the poetry of the language down quite badly.

I think you're right...there were a few instances, when I did look at the subtitles, where they just didn't get everything in. But to do that, you'd probably have so much text that you can't actually read it all...

Hailing from a country where everything is subtitled, there's a certain art to it. You can't fit all linguistic connotations into two rows of text, and often you don't have the time to make a proper translation like you'd do with a book.

There's also a certain knack to watching subtitled films, I suspect. You take the hue and attitude from the dialogue, and the core meaning from the subtitles.

I love "Wings of Desire" but it's not a movie to watch if one is depressed. I tried that once and it broke me.

*ouch*

Yes, I can see that.
