Good old Gruaniad

Their article on "why the North is best" is headlined with a Tennyson quote:

"Bright and fierce and fickle is the South
And dark and true and tender is the North".

I'm tempted to adopt that as the family motto...

Didn't Orwell write an essay about this?

He certainly did (it's on line at http://www.george-orwell.org/North_And_South/0.html)and it's interesting how much it is written against the background of a prosperous industrial north.

Putting the quote in an Indian context has me in giggles...

Tender? True? North? If you see what I mean...

Hee! I'm not sure it works in the U.S. either...

That's where I was about to go with it, as well. :P

(Having lived in the Northeast, and now living in Texas, I have some idea, and, well, the Tennyson doesn't fit here. Not that Texas is quite like the South in any case, it's its own place. Got into quite the discussion about that over dinner.)

Hey, our sambar is quite fierce, and Punjabi chicken can be quite tender.

I like that too.

My chosen userpic is all the additional comment I will make.

Sometimes a picture paints a thousand words. Mostly "fish", obviously.

my only comment is often when the media says the South, what they mean is London.

I know bits of the South who are struggling as much as bits of the North.

The media is mostly based in London, so everywhere else is secondary to them.

I guess I've always known that, but it has become increasingly obvious since Scotland got its own parliament.
