World shut your mouth, shut your mouth...

I'm thinking of going friends only - will this inconvenience any regular lurkers (this means you, Mr King) and could I persuade them to get free accounts and befriend me (this means you, too).

I just realised that I'm giving out more of myself in this forum than I normally would to strangers, and that I don't really want to clam up, or create two levels of entries...

Any advice from anyone who has gone friends only, or who has resisted, gratefully received....

I do a lot of friends-only posting, but they're not all f-o. Essentially, anything that's highly personal or could identify me (e.g. about my work), is f-locked. Vacuous nonsense that might have come from anyone is left open.

I've been slowly drifting towards this over the last couple of years, and probably should go back and lock more of the personal stuff (though I've always locked the work stuff). It seems to work OK.

Oh, you can lock retrospectively? I didn't know that...

I think so. You just go back in and edit old posts the same as you would any others.

You can, but be warned that this will take time to filter through to (eg in particular) the google cache.

I use multiple levels of protection myself. Most personal stuff, and everything about my professional life (as opposed to about the law) is locked.

My position is similar. If I'm uncomfortable about the stuff being public, I flock.

"Flock" I like that...

Dream of ancient feet.

As long as you instantly friend anyone I tell you to, you have my permission.

I want to know what your grand scheme is with this. Suspect that you hold the reins of all LJ-land. I fear what this might mean in the long term. Is Koko pulling your strings?

As for me, "Mongo is but pawn in game of life."

Hee!

Let us just say I am proud to serve.

*fears*

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2005-12-20 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that I trust your taste absolutely, this is not a problem.

[identity profile] widgetfox.livejournal.com 2005-12-20 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall pass this compliment on to the person it's obviously meant for.

Oh, I trust his taste too...

[identity profile] widgetfox.livejournal.com 2005-12-20 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You have obviously not seen the beige suit.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2005-12-20 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true...

[identity profile] deililly.livejournal.com 2006-01-04 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*cough*

Probably a bit silly to mention this so late on but I do swing past here from time to time.

If you think you can cope with my bilge I would be pretty happy to add you though :) My lj is fully friends locked since I tend to say whatever is in my head at the time without thinking.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2006-01-04 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll add you to my wee list immediately. And I'd be honoured to be added back.

I'm swinging between attitudes of "why would anyone care what I have to say?" and extreme paranoia...

Mine was public till I realised about 30 people knew who I was and it was growing. Suddenly I had a panic of feeling like I was standing on a cyber table and shouting to the crowd :) But it really should always be what you are comfortable with. A surprising number of folk got an lj to read mine in the end, so don't feel you have to stay public if you don't want to.
