The other side of the fence

I was browsing through the excellent Clive James web-site when I came upon a link to one of P.J. O'Rourke's articles, and then to his post-election piece on how the U.S. Conservatives blew it. One of the responsibilities that liberal democracy puts on us is to realise that our opponenents might be wrong, but that they can be just as noble in their intent as we are in our own self-righteous way. I know that, honestly I do, but is it fair that they can be funny, too?

Classic O'Rourke. I love the way conservative pundits always differentiate between what "Conservatism" is and what conservatives actually do, every time. And they expect us to believe they will be different next time.

Spot on - although he does say that "Next time" will be a long time coming...

I'll happily go further: Everybody does this.

I don't think Conservatives should ever do anything differently. What point being Conservative, else?
