f4f3: (Tom Waits)

Shuffling around...

I had a chance to listen to a couple of tracks when I was walking to the coffee shop, and used the iPod genius function to seed a playlist from Warren Zevon's "Johnny Strikes Up The Band". It turned out to be a good move..."Less Than Zero" by Elvis Costello, "These Days" by Jackson Browne, "Desperadoes Under The Eaves" and "Don't Let Us Get Sick" by Uncle Warren again, and, most of all, "Jersey Girl" by Tom Waits. These days, when Tom is mostly a vaudeville show of Tom (a wonderful show, but still...) I almost forget what pulled me to him in the first place. Sparsely orchestrated tunes, half whispered, half groaned, that could pluck out your heart and leave it spinning slowly, like at 33 rpm.

So I'm finishing off tonight with "Blue Valentines", and "Burma Shave", and maybe "Blind Love". Yes...

Good night, all, and remember, they say that dreams are growing wild just this side of Burma Shave...

I want your playlist.

OMG Jersey Girl is one of the best songs ever written.

Pls tell me you have the Bruce version?

Cuz down the shore everything's all right. (You do know we say that, yes?)

Oh, and if you want the playlist, just tell me how to get it to you...

I do indeed have the Bruce version, recorded in Jersey - and I love it. But Tom's will always be the original for me.
