How the fuck has my LJ acquired a football theme? Anyone else getting that? This is not why I have a paid account...

Do you mean just the header on the comment pages, if you don't have them in your journal style? They change that every month to something 'seasonal'.

My latest theory notes that LJ is a Russian company, and apparently some sort of footie comp is going on over there.

That can't be it. Mine has a football thing with a Polish jersey. Russia wouldn't do that.
I suspect it's because everyone in the world loves football and if you don't love football you're a miserable freak of nature and you don't want your country to be happy. At least that's the impression I'm getting from being in Poland.

Well, we are in the middle of the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament, being held in Poland and Ukraine. Maybe they're only bothering to push the theme on European users. I don't see it, though I've been watching many of the games. I sometimes get annoyed when they push holiday themes like Halloween at me.
