Whims and Privilege – Or, How I Am Not My Parents

As noted elsewhere, I was pretty low over Christmas and jumped on a plane and went to Prague. Pretty much on a whim. It worked out well for me, I think.

Last night, I arrived at the cottage to look at the completed building work and, although I really like the results, the place is a bit of a bomb site.

So, pretty much on a whim, I jumped in the car and on to two ferries, and now I’m staying in Jura’s only hotel for one night. I’m hoping that will work out pretty well, too.

What occurred to me about this, as I was standing in the driving rain watching two stages graze in front of the hotel, is that I am just staggeringly lucky, and that luck is fragile, and I should appreciate it as much as I can. I might be out of work at the end of the month. My diabetes might flare up and be a huge issue this year, stopping me from earning. My parents have both worked all their lives to provide for their families, and, so far as I know, never had the luxury of flying off on a whim. I am lucky.

Also, and as you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been really down lately because two very important people have gone from my life, and I might never get either of them back. But I have many friends who love me, and care for me, and I am very, very lucky in that too.

So the next wee while will be about appreciating that luck, about being good to my friends, about getting impatient while I wait for the sun to shine.

Now I'm going to go downstairs to the hotel bar with a book and a notebook. I may very well stroke my chin, smile, and write something. Just because I can.

Awwww. I'm glad that you're focussing on the good things in life!

It would still be nice to meet up if you're in Edinburgh at some point!

That would be an excellent idea - some time next week, maybe? I'm expecting to spend as much of this week as possible asleep!

Next week is doable, although I'm booked up for Tuesday and Thursday. I'll check with Julie tonight and message you!

Good - Wednesday would be good for me, or Monday. Friday I'll be off West early doors.

And *hugs* back - I seem to be running a deficit at the moment...

Sorry to hear you have been down - sucks when people drift apart or move on.

Hope you manage to wrestle the cottage back from being a builders bombsite - too well acquainted with the mess they can leave behind!

I have a rough plan to get the cottage back up and running. Mostly it involves mopping every surface, and throwing out lots of stuff. Plan is that my brother will come up two weekends from now, and we can decorate too. I'm really looking forward to it.

Lovely to hear you sounding so happy. I'm sure it's nothing to do with the amount of single malts available there ;)

I was very good - one malt and a couple of glasses of wine with dinner.
