Hello, I Must Be Going
Jul. 26th, 2013 02:49 pmI'm now four weeks into the new job, so it's time to take two weeks off. I'm afraid this won't be the normal pattern, but for various reasons this is the best time to take my summer vacation, while it's still summer.
Also for various reasons I have no clear idea what I'll be doing for the next two weeks. Saturday until Monday I'll be in Iona, but after that it's all up in the air.
This is not unrelated to my personal life, which is also all a bit up in the air at the moment. Not as far up as it looked to be last Sunday, but still a bit, what was the word, unresolved.
I'm looking forward to the trip to Iona. I spent a memorable week there in 1981, and I want to know if I've changed more than the island has. I'll be getting there entirely by public transport - train to Oban, ferry to Mull, bus across Mull and wee ferry to Iona. I've booked two nights at a B&B there, and then will return along the same path.
After that, well, my options are open. I may have some cycling time in the islands, using my old touring bike to go the length of the Hebrides. I may cycle from Glasgow to Ardrishaig on the new bike, travelling light and swiftly. I might spend some time in Ireland. I might take the night sleeper and Eurostar to Paris, or Amsterdam (or the sleeper and the Hook of Harwich ferry, which would let me have my own bike in mainland Europe. I might jump on the first package holiday leaving Glasgow on Tuesday morning. Or some combination of all of these.
But, for the moment, I'm just going to get on a train tomorrow, and see what spools out in front of me.
Have a good time, y'all, and I promise to keep you posted.

Last time I was there (last year) I actually saw a corncrake (in the field beside the abbey) after years of hearing but not seeing them.
