Swings, Roundabouts, Snakes, Ladders.

You remember how I've been going on about doing a big holiday for Birthday 5-0?

That idle thought grew arms and legs when I got a VAT rebate of £3.5k, and I've just about got an itinerary worked out, and booked my holidays from work.

Then I got a call from my accountant, who, in the course of putting together my self-assessment for this year, realised that the way he's been handling my income from contract work doesn't apply any more due to some changes in the releavant tax law.

Long and short of it is that I have to find another £8k or so by 1st of March and, while I can probably do that, the holiday is probably a goner. I'm not going to moan about this - while paying the tax is going to leave me with a cash flow hole through till at least May I OWE the money, and I'll be paying it.

There's the option of going into liquidation since my company has ceased trading, without assets, and the Revenue could basically whistle for their money, but I don't really think it IS an option. It's stealing, so that I can keep my spending money, and it's not for me.

I'm going to miss out on seeing [livejournal.com profile] helianthas , though, and  [livejournal.com profile] slobberpuppy and spending time with my son in Houston and Eric in Manhattan, and that really pisses me off.

But, hey, first world problems, and nobody died...

My sincere sympathy, that's a shit situation to end up in.

You have my admiration for playing it completely honestly though - and I hope that you earn loads of money over the next while, in order to pay it back.

Yep, this.

Well it's not something I see a choice in - you live here, you pay your taxes. I don't mind planning to pay as efficiently as I can, but paying them isn't optional. And I'm very glad that this is an inconvenience to me, not a matter of eating or not, or having to leave my home because one room is used for medical needs.

I do agree with Andrew. I really hope that you come out of this better than you expect xxx

I'll be fine :) Let's face it, I don't NEED a big exotic holiday.

Oh no!!!! That still blows. Glad you're taking it well though. Wish you could put off paying it for a while and come visit! Frequent flyer miles? (How did you ever decide to do the ticket, if you'd be going, btw?)

It blows chunks. But it does mean I'll come out when the weather is warmer :)

I think I'd have been going with the Glasgow-Newark flight, with a stopover in SF on the way to Hawaii. Going Virgin was tempting though, because I could have built in a London stopover with the lovely lady below :)

Oh sweetheart, I'm sorry. Big party in Glasgae instead?

And abso-fucking-lutely what Andrew said about you doing A. GOOD. THING. and how I hope it comes back to you in multiples.

I'm not sure what the alternative is - I have a couple of ideas, though.
