The Song Remains The Same...
Off to see Lloyd Cole with K tonight, the first time we've seen him together since, oh, 1987 or so. It was a great concert - I've seen him a few times over the years playing solo gigs, him and a guitar. This was a full band show, 4 guitars, drums and keyboards, and, frankly, it rocked.
The new material from Standards is strong, and the set-list was cleverly chosen from the faster songs of the last 30 years. At one point I was surprised when he went from a new song straight into Brand New Friend - it took a minute for me to jump the mental rails and remember that the same man wrote both songs.
Encore was a stonking "Forest Fire", rather than the "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?" I was expecting, but, even though Heartbroken is my favourite of his songs, Forest Fire was a better ending, and a message I needed to hear.
Go on, you can hear it too - a smouldering solo version, not the inferno we had on stage tonight.
