Rock and Roll is the Devil's Music

unblinkered to see American Music Club at Oran Mor last night. Got down just after 7 to pick up our tickets, but the support weren't due to start until eight (remarkably they had a little timetable pinned to the wall: Bee and Flower: 8.00, AMC: 9-10:15 - how rock and rol)! Oh no! What to do? Um, go upstairs to the cocktail bar and have two cocktails? Well why not... I had a dram martini and a very nice perfect Manhattan on the rocks.
The concert was in Oran Mor's nightclub, which is the undercroft of the church. By the time Bee and Flower came on it was around a quarter full, and they probably deserved better. A Berlin five piece, with a transplanted San Francisco front-woman they were...ok. I've heard worse from support. Three members of the Tom Waits Junior Fashion Club, a cellist, and the lead singer, who had a nice snake tatoo. When I see a cello on stage, my heart tends to sink. Here comes melancholy, I always think. Ah well.
AMC shambled on stage around 8.45, setting up their own instruments. Mark Eitzel seems to have gotten older in the 16 years since I last saw him (just realised, that's a lie - I saw them playing a record store in London sometime in the mid-90's). They've acquired a new drummer and bassist, both very pretty, and both, it quickly transpired, capable of blasting out a lot of noise. They opened with "Hello Amsterdam" which is a good punky paen to the joys of touring. I won't do a set list: they didn't play everything I wanted to hear, but the second song was "Blue and Grey Shirt", one of my favourites. The new material is very strong, they had a huge amount of energy, Eitzel announced them as "Wish the World Away", an American Music Club tribute band, and enjoyed his usual nervous banter with the crowd. Basically, they rocked, and I had a great time.
