So, farewell then, Belhaven Terrace.
May. 20th, 2008 11:12 pmO2 decided to cut my phone off today - apparently the direct debit that failed in April has not been called for again in May. So apologies to anyone who didn't get a ring back. I should be back in business tomorrow morning.
Off to fencing tonight, and benefited greatly from having two coaches between three fencers - one of the coaches the estimable rwrylsin. It was fantastic to see the two of them take an en garde opposite each other when they were demonstrating. It all makes sense when you see someone GOOD do it. Still, I'm not sure I'll ever get the hang of low-line...
Where the other five novices got to is a mystery, but there's no truth in the rumour that I locked them in Scoobie's boot. Partly because I'd never put anyone in something so dirty, and partly because I need to keep it empty to carry more fecking boxes from the old flat to the new.
Who would have guessed that I would acquire so much junk in one measly year? The protracted moving out should be over by this weekend, especially since I'm not going to the SMWS tomorrow night, but staying in Glasgow to move more fecking boxes. And I'm staying in Glasgow this weekend to move more... well, actually, to clean the place more than anything else. Unblinkered has been doing wonders licking the new place into shape while I gad about fencing and such like.
Moving out of the old place has been sad, in a low key sort of way. I've gone through a hell of a lot in the year I stayed there, some for the good, some for the bad, and it holds more for me in terms of memories than places I've stayed far longer. "Experience is as to intensity, and not as to duration", as someone said somewhere.
The place has many ghosts, some of whom only visited once or twice, some of whom came to stay. On balance, although sad things happened while I was there, it was a happy place. I'll remember it for last Summer, and my first annual housewarming, for visits from pshtaku and frankieecap, scunner_darkly and parthenia14, delilly, psychochicken, zantic, sha_d, billking1959, blonde222... and all the non-lj folk too, Daniel and Radka, Marie, my sister and her husband, John, my late landlord, my son, my wife. I'll remember it for the folk who didn't stay long enough, and those who never made it to stay at all. I'll remember it as the place unblinkered stayed when she visited for that first housewarming party, the first time we spent more than a lunch time together.
I'll remember it smiling. It was a hell of a year, the year I spent there, but I've come out of it a lot more happy than I went in. And that counts as a win for me.

Date: 2008-05-21 04:42 pm (UTC)Just FYI. I fly into Glasgow on Friday June 6th (US Airways from Philly) and have to go straight to the passport office in Cowcaddens......so if you happen to have that day off (unlilkely I know) - we could grab a bacon roll or two while the civil servants work feverishly to issue new passports for Brat 1 and Brat 2?
One last thought. A very wise man once said to me that any job you take should only set you up for the next one......think ahead to life after this one! He is a very wise man and he and I will be meeting in London when I am back....my last job will have setup the next one hopefully......will be looking to buy a house when I back as well.....busy busy!
Oh, and thanks for Flat Stanley!! Rick said his son was delighted!! Send me the pics when you get a chance.

Date: 2008-05-21 10:13 pm (UTC)I still think I was more angry at stupid corp. than hurt - and I did make them pay a little bit. But no, you're right, it's something I'd rather hadn't happened.
I might not be off on June the 6th, but I'm sure I can take a long enough lunch, or knock off early enough, to see something of you before you have to skip off. Are you sure you can't set aside Friday night for a West End pub crawl? I know a lot of people would be glad to see you.
The Flat Stanley trip was fun for us too - the whole event, uncensored, is up at my flikr - let me know if you've lost the link.
