Ah, I remember the glory days of Steampunk...

Feeling nostalgic for a movement that's only just hit the Gruaniad is probably a little perverse, but this article did remind me of reading The Difference Engine on a train to Anniesland College, where my girlfriend had taken a course on computing, which resulted in her totting about bundles of punched cards.

I knew it would never catch on...

I nearly attended a steampunk con in NJ last month, mostly just for the cosplay of it all. I hope I can go next year. It just seems like kooky fun.

A few years ago I gave myself a summer reading project of 19th Century science fiction, so I am actually pretty current on Edward Bellamy and HG Wells. But I had an eerily similar experience reading The Difference Engine back in the day. I was on business travel to a convention where the hotel rooms had punchcards for keys!

I had a friend once who used to work for the DHSS, punching the holes in the cards...

From punch cards to World of Warcraft in 30 years - wonder where we'll be in another 30?
