Friends came to visit on Friday (you know who you are) leading to excellent Japanese food, followed by excellent chat over some remarkably excellent whisky. Saturday morning brought a busy flat, as we demolished some of Melis' finest cheeses, and the knitters started to gather for the knitting weekend. More or less on the stroke of twelve I was left to my own devices, as knitters and friends headed variously East and West. I mooched for a bit, then jumped on the bike and cycled over to my dad's - not a small thing - he lives on the other side of town, and it's not a journey I normally make without taking the M8 and the Kingston Bridge. Not a route best taken on a bike. So I meandered down one river, then alongside another, took the Squinty bridge into Govan, crossed the Motorway by footbrdge, freewheeled through Pollokshields and then cut through another park to my dad's. My brother was already there, with the twins, and I'd just missed my sister scolding him on the phone for not telling us about his operation. It was a snap decision, apparently. A routine check-up showed a partially blocked artery in his neck, and the consultant in charge had just came up with a new technique for treating that under a local anesthetic. My dad heard "local" and thought "routine". Instead he had 5 folk to get him comfortably numb, and then 7 others in the theater for the op. The outcome was good, thankfully, and he was only in hospital for one night. He looked a little shaken by the experience, but seemed cheerful enough. I didn't have the heart to scold him further.

I cycled home, using more roads and less cycle paths, and beat the dark and the rain by a fewm moments. John and Bill came round in the evening, and we had an exceedingly pleasant time pointing out that "The Chronicles of Riddick" does actually have a plot, and ordering mountains of food. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our bellies, which is a startling reversal on previous form.

I tend to forget that Bill is one of the few people in the world who can convulse me in laughter. He was over in Scotland to renew his passport, since he's off on his travels in the new year, and it was wonderful to see him before his birthday (I won't say which birthday, but his username IS [livejournal.com profile] billking1959 .

We hit the hay around 2 a.m. and were up around 8 to get him off to the train station. Since I was in town, I hung around and tried to do some shopping. Complete fail.

Had another cycle while the light held out, up to Royston Hill, to see the old Convent which I've always known was there, and never visited. It's ruined now, with a bmx park in the old precincts, which I love.

[livejournal.com profile] unblinkered has just arrived home, so we'll chill for half an hour or so, and then it's off to Steve Earle with Mike and Marie, and probably a pretty good end to a pretty good weekend...
