(no subject)

Planning a weekend jaunt across the waters.

The note put me off, slightly. What the hell is happening on Jura?

Are any of the quarries still active? If so, they are likely transporting blasting supplies.

Darn, so it's not the sohighlysecretitdoesntofficiallyexist facility where Lord Lucan reverse engineers the crashed UFOs?

There's a lot of chatter about that part of the world in UFO-ologist circles. I guess having one of the longest runways in Europe at the tip of a scarcely populated peninsula tweaks some interest...

[identity profile] hano.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
D'oh, of course, I'd forgotten that's where RAF Machrihanish was before it closed. Certainly USAF SR-71s used to stop off there occasionally after flying over Northern Russia and the US Navy had a SEAL detachment there. So the military used to encourage the UFO stuff - was a perfect cover story as to the rather more, ah, earthbound, stuff they were actually doing.

[identity profile] hano.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and iirc it used to be where they stored the majority of the UK's nuclear bombs, something you really wouldn't want to advertise that you're moving.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Archie Knox, a friend of a friend, was asked by local police why he was asking so many questions about the airbase. He told them he wanted to find out if you could land a Tupolov nuclear bomber there. True story.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, I was playing golf at Macrahanish one day (probably the best course I've ever played) when a Hercules flew over out into the bay opened the cargo door, and dumped a platoon of navy seals out of the back, leaving them to swim ashore.

[identity profile] fiendish-cat.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[tangent] My brother knows Lord Lucan.

Let me explain...

They finally declared *the* Lord Lucan dead which means his son - yes, that baby - has now inherited the title. And is friends with my brother's boss.

So I suppose it might be more accurate to say my brother has met Lord Lucan. But that's not quite such a good soundbyte. [/endtanget]

[identity profile] hano.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that's fantastic! Don't suppose he knows where Shergar is does he?

[identity profile] fiendish-cat.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, they did say recently they were going to pave over the front garden......

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lloyd George knew my mother :)

[identity profile] fiendish-cat.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And thanks (not) for the earworm

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't get many of them to the pound.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And I suppose movement of explosives could be classified, given that Jura isn't all that far from Ireland, and probably a good smuggling point...

I don't think any of the quarries are still open though. You can get better slate elsewhere, and there isn't a big enough harbour for bulk mining.

I think it's a Torchwood internment centre.

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
If you were moving large amounts of explosives I’d think you would classify that in case they were stolen.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Or in case anyone wondered what you were doing with them.
And what the HELL is that new userpic?

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well obviously in case anyone wondered what you were doing with them.

You can' tell people these things. They might ask questions.

The new userpic is a whimsical Machievelli.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There may be rockets galore. And I've always liked Machievelli. A regular ray of sunshine, he is.

Old Nic was cursed to see clearly where others refused to look.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always read "The Prince" as a satire (as well as world-class, life-saving arse licking)

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You see, I've got two copies, one filed under politics, practical guides and one filed under self-help.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have the one with the etchings then?

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a copy of Mandrake - if that's what you mean.

Say no more.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! I have the original root!

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you may be confusing the verb to have with the veb to be.

[identity profile] danieldwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed.

[identity profile] chickenfeet2003.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "classified" here refers to Transportation of Hazardous Goods Regulations (or something of that ilk) rather than the Official Secrets Act

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You are almost certainly right. I will be wrong, but romantic.

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Could also be whisky.

[identity profile] parthenia14.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Deer? Perhaps it's a stag do.

*runs*

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You can run *bang* but you can't *bang* hide *bang*

[identity profile] ruric.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Have they relocated Portland Down?

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! Portland Down was for the sissy stuff they don't do on Scottish Islands.

[identity profile] hano.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you mean Porton Down?

[identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Shh! Careless talk costs lives!

[identity profile] clanwilliam.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Jura, as any fule kno, is the place with the top-secret lab where they're engineering a new breed of killer haggis.

[identity profile] hano.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God. Imagine if it escaped! There'd be blood Irn-Bru on the streets!

How would you tell the difference? #justanothersaturday
