There's a lot of chatter about that part of the world in UFO-ologist circles. I guess having one of the longest runways in Europe at the tip of a scarcely populated peninsula tweaks some interest...
D'oh, of course, I'd forgotten that's where RAF Machrihanish was before it closed. Certainly USAF SR-71s used to stop off there occasionally after flying over Northern Russia and the US Navy had a SEAL detachment there. So the military used to encourage the UFO stuff - was a perfect cover story as to the rather more, ah, earthbound, stuff they were actually doing.
Oh and iirc it used to be where they stored the majority of the UK's nuclear bombs, something you really wouldn't want to advertise that you're moving.
Archie Knox, a friend of a friend, was asked by local police why he was asking so many questions about the airbase. He told them he wanted to find out if you could land a Tupolov nuclear bomber there. True story.
Yup, I was playing golf at Macrahanish one day (probably the best course I've ever played) when a Hercules flew over out into the bay opened the cargo door, and dumped a platoon of navy seals out of the back, leaving them to swim ashore.
