I'm Going To NYC
Jun. 1st, 2012 11:30 pmAfter posting my last entry about THIS weekend, I realised that I should post about next weekend, just in case anyone wants to meet up with me while I'm in New York (I almost said "hook up". Apparently this could lead to confusion. And unforeseen but probably not hilarious consequences. So I didn't.)
Current plan is to take an early train from Providence on Saturday morning, and a late one back on Sunday night. This gives me from, say 11 on Saturday morning till 7.30 or 9.00 on Sunday in the Big Apple.
At the moment I have no plans beyond meeting up with
anthrokeight when she can get away from her conferrence, which I think is Saturday night. Things I'd like to do include seeing the Frick Collection (which I've never seen) the Met (which I can never see enough of) and The Mysterious Bookshop (who can never take enough of my money). I arrive at Penn Station, and will be hungry like the wolf, so brunch is an option, then gallery hopping in the afternoon, dinner with Ms. Anthro and whomever on Saturday night, Sunday brunch, wandering, shopping, gossip and train.
If anyone wants to play, get in touch below, and we'll figure something out...

Date: 2012-06-02 11:46 pm (UTC)Also, food within and directly around Penn Station is pretty dreary, but if you walk a few blocks east to Herald Square, you will land in Korea Town. I'm partial to Won Jo at 23 W 32nd St. if you are looking for lunchy stuff. The other place I frequent in that area is a fancy beer pub, but I know that is wasted on you so I won't suggest it.

Date: 2012-06-03 06:18 pm (UTC)I am staying at Barnard during the conference. We can't really ditch sessions, since we are all contributing to sessions, so I will be free about 5PM or just after. I will keep my schedule free for you two for the rest of Saturday night. If you're having a wander around the Met beforehand, it should be pretty easy to meet up (right? Am I right about that? Chicago is the biggest city I know well enough to say such things about.).
The only kind-of pretty-good food to be had in St. Cloud, MN is Asian of one sort or another (thank you, Hmong immigrants). If you two are down with Korean more than anything else, I'm happy to give it a shot. But since it's NYC and we have so much not good Mexican, "Italian" and let's keep making a list where I am, dinner in Not-Asia would really make me happy.
If you jet me a note at kate.costello@gmail.com we can swap contact information if you like.

Date: 2012-06-03 09:21 pm (UTC)Yes, the Met is convenient to Barnard. There is a bus that will connect the two easily.
The restaurants up around the university are, well, like restaurants around a university. But we can meet you at Barnard and them maybe take a subway to Greenwich Village or whatever you'd like. You are the visitors, so I bow to your cuisine desires -- I only suggested Korean as the best thing near the station.
So Kate, take your pick. New York is overflowing with Italian restaurants (it seems to be the end state of all restaurant venues), though I don't have a current favorite, and of course we have great Jewish delis. There's a good Mexican on the Upper East Side, and there is really pretty much anything else you could want somewhere in the city. Why don't you take a look at http://www.menupages.com and get some ideas?

Date: 2012-06-06 01:47 pm (UTC)So Kate, what's your dining pleasure?
Also, I am thinking that I may not be up to the museum jaunt if my current knee injury does not respond better to the chiropractor tonight. Standing around on marble floors is not very good for it :-(
