I think by the time you are middle-aged you're meant to have exchanged trendy for style.

I think I've gone in reverse. Between 15 and 25 I mostly bought two brands - Doc Marten and Levis. For work, I'd add Thomas Pink to the list, for shirts. Now I've added Ted Baker and Paul Smith. I think 5 is enough, yes?

I think a dedication to one brand is more than plenty.

I guess it is pretty lazy. But I like to think of it as minimising time spent choosing. Thus if I want shoes, I only need ever go to one shop. Ditto for trousers. And for work shirts. I think I might actually be buying clothes at Ted Baker and Paul Smith for *gulp* pleasure.

That makes sense and I probably apply the same logic myself from the other direction. There are some shops or brands that I wouldn’t consider looking at for a new suit because I know that they tend to skinny fits and no matter how much weight I lose this year I’m never going to be skinny.

What is this shopping pleasure of which you speak?

I'm not sure. I think it taps into the same urge as collecting. But also...
I've decided this year to wear clothes that actually fit me, as opposed to going along with my usual "XL fits all" approach. Something to do with my waist going from 40" to 34" (by some measurements)and my trousers falling down. Plus, I now have an incentive to keep round about this weight, or lose some more, so that my clothes fit. I might go round throwing out all of my 38 and 40" trousers.
