Lettery Memeage
Jan. 7th, 2014 11:31 amSomething I hate: I don’t hate that many things (apart from asparagus) so this is particularly hard. Vipers. Nasty bitey slithery things. And Victory V’s. Why? In God’s name, why? And Vests. Does anyone still wear a vest? Apart from Bruce Willis, of course. Oh, and for the serious answer, Violence. Committing or suffering from, it’s the most destructive of our impulses, the one I hate seeing the most, and the one I hate giving in to the most.
Something I love: Vacations. This is more or less theoretical – 2013 didn’t really have any vacations, and I have nothing planned for 2014, but I love discovering new places, and meeting new people. Anything from two weeks on a beach to walking around a new city, to sitting in the cottage looking at the rain. And this year, for the first time in about ten years, I get to have paid holidays.
Somewhere I have been: Ben Venue. Probably. It was raining, and misty, and I was soaked and hacked off and, to be honest, one bloody mountain in the rain looks a lot like another bloody mountain in the rain. My first and last bit of Munro Bagging.
Somewhere I would like to go: Venice. It’s becoming increasingly anomalous that I’ve never been to Italy, and Venice would be on the itinerary. I blame the painters, and Turner in particular. I’m sure very many of you will tell me that it’s no more than an open sewer with some nice decoration, but I’ll buy the legend.
Someone I know: My phone has “Vet” and “BT Vision”, and I’m not going to write about either of them. Someone I wish I still knew is Veronica – she was the other smart person in my year at school. I decided I was doing Law at Uni, she decided she was doing Medicine, and we were the first to do either from our school. It’s entirely possibly that she began my fascination with smart, articulate brunettes. And I never even thanked her for it.
Best movie: V for Vendetta is both one of the worst and one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It looks fantastic, has a lot of good performances, and if I’d never read the original I’d probably have loved it. The visuals follow David Lloyd’s work on the comic almost slavishly (he worked on the movie) and the characters start from the same premise as Alan Moore’s script. Unfortunately, the movie turns the relationship of V and Evey into a Beauty and the Beast pastiche, and V’s anarchist ideals are smoothed over into some sort of freedom fighter wishy-washiness. I watched the movie once, and have never cared to do it again (despite having the DVD).
Comment and I will give you a letter.
