Now I promised I'd keep you up to date on my gym use, and here it is Saturday and not a peek. So did I chicken out and not go along after my induction? Not a bit of it. I went along on Thursday after work, and got down there just before seven. i'd intended to stick the half hour workout I used to do most mornings, of 5 minutes warm up and cool down on the bike, 10 minutes each on the steps and rowing machine, then spend about an hour in the sauna. I figure I can do two or three sessions of that, then start back on the weights sometime next week.

The bike was fine - I liked being able to see my heartrate, and it got into the recommended range pretty quickly, which didn't surprise me, and stayed there, which did. After the five minutes I wandered over to a rowing machine, set it to 10 minutes and the resistance to about 50%, and remembered pretty quickly that rowing machines bore me. Rowing I like, rowing machines I don't so I cut it short after 5 minutes and made my way over to the step machines. Definite improvement here - I remembered I hated them before I even got on, so I didn't.

On to the cross-trainer instead, a kind of mock-up of a cross-country ski-ing thing, which uses your arms as well as the legs. This was actually great fun - I was listening to my "I'll sleep when I'm dead" mix, which, I was ashamed to admit, had a lot more eighties stuff on it than I thought - Robert Palmer singing "some like it hot" for instance. Anyway, ten minutes on the trainer was quite good fun. Then I realised I'd been going backwards, instead of forwards - well, who knew? So another 10 minutes for completeness going the other way, five minutes on the bike to cool down, and then a sybaritic half hour in the pool, sauna and spa bath. All in all, well worth rewarding with two glasses of white wine afterwards.

Friday morning I had a spell in the pool before work (pretty quiet at 7.30). Next week I'll try to make it an hour in the morning, half in the gym and half in the pool.

And next week I also promise to find out how to do LJ cuts, so you won't all have to be bored by my born-again enthusiasm!

a) Not to the best of my knowledge. (How politically correct can I get?!?) However, possibly you misinterpret my comment - I was more thinking along the lines of self-deception. :)

b) Somehow, I wouldn't. It's me that finds it hard to believe, in my own little Fox Mulder zone. When I've time, I might even explain myself.

I like the cross trainer - I could spend more than my allotted 10 minutes on it! My gym has got headphone sockets on the machines so that you listen to MTV, VH1 or the news when you are exercising. This is all very well - but I hate the way the volume gets louder when they have the stupid ringtone adverts!!!

I think I need to spend some time getting a playlist ready!!

Our place has five tellies on five different channels- I've resorted to using my in-ear phones, which cut off everything. I made up a Gym mix at the weekend, but forgot to transfer it to my ipod, which meant I was listening to my mountain biking mix this morning. Very appropriate for the bike, less so for cross training.

I think I'll ask for suggestions...
