Now that I've had enough coffee...

I'm getting fed up listening to faux-cynical gen-x'ers tell us how over charities, and religion, and state-sponsored capitalism they are. Do you know what? Nobody cares. If you're offended by someone wearing a poppy, deal with it. It's not as if their act of rememberance is impinging on one of your increasing number of "human rights", unless it's "my inalienable right to not give a toss about the people who died to shut down the death camps."

And come to think of it, being all cynical and ironical about "fighting for freedom" - catch a grip, here, the pronouncements of an industry of spin-doctors shouldn't make you doubt for a second that there are some things that are worth fighting for, that not all of those things stopped existing in 1945, and that you would be first up against the wall if any one of a number of Glorious Days actually did Come.

And, as Everclear sing, "I hate those people who love to tell you that money is the root of all that kills, they have never been poor they have never known the joy of a Welfare Christmas". If you don't like Children in Need, turn it off, and don't put anything in the cans. Don't moan about it when others do contribute. And don't come around with your vague, No-Logo, list of things that bum me out, man, like saving the whales from nuclear powerstations by driving solar powered cars and drinking wine out of cardboard bottles.

What people need these days is a lot less passion and a lot more good manners.

Um, would this be the moment where I tactfully point out that if you don't like it when cynical (nothing faux about it, 'fraid) people who really are irritated by increasing misapplication of the word "freedom" by our opportunist politicians rant about such things, you probably shouldn't read my journal? ;)

Nah, because then how would I get things to rant about? Besides, one of those things we should be prepared to fight for is freedom of speech, and I flat out LIKE your journal so there. I espescially like your rants, and since it's something I hardly ever do I decided to try my hand at it. Very satisfying it was too.

I moved the rant out of being a reply over to my own space because I thought it would be rude doing it in yours (kind of like turning up for a party and insulting the decor).

Ah, that would be because I've been slack and haven't friended you. I should fix that! Poke me in a day or so if I haven't got around to it. Most of my posts with any meaning whatsoever are f-locked.

One other thing, and I'm quite serious about this. I am, in person, very well-mannered, and sincerely so; should we ever meet, I hope you will find this to be the case! Rudeness is one of my pet-hates. But I come here to LJ to spout off about things that irritate me; I don't even care if nobody reads them. I just need to get them off my chest, and because many of them would render me a social pariah if I voiced them in general company, this is where I come to unwind.

Yes, and I hope I do respect that - being allowed to comment in your space, and even more, being allowed to see what you vent about in your space, is a privilege for me - I hope I don't abuse it. There is a whole action/re-action thing, which means I probably wouldn't have thought seriously about the issues above without a stimulus, and this came from you, and I really am grateful for it. The sentiments aren't new to me, though, I was worrying about this a lot more in the 80's, when the fashion for contracting out of society was driving me to distraction.

I do owe you an apology, though, I should have been far more general about my comments - they weren't actually aimed at you, more at a non-existent stereotype, and I didn't make enough attempt to establish that, besides moving out of your journal into mine. I made remarks that can naturally be seen as personal when I meant them to be general, and that was just thoughtless and I apologise for that thoughtlessness.

*blush* I know, it's a bad habit. But plain text is a very low context medium, and I know from experience how easy it is to upset someone without meaning to, and while the insult might be illusory, the upset is real.
