f4f3: (jack shit)

Just back from a proper boys day out with Mikey. We drove up to Cruachan, to take the tour inside "the hollow mountain" and look at the incredibly huge turbine hall 2/3 of a mile inside the mountain, then visited our old dive shop at Gallanch via a very good chippy at Oban.

Now we're back at the cottage, and we've started watching "A Fistful of Dollars", in the knowledge that [personal profile] unblinkered is bringing up the DVD of "300" tonight.

Which made me wonder what else would be on the bill for an evening of movies for men who like movies for men.

So far we have "Point Blank" and "Get Carter". I've disqualified "Die Hard" on the grounds that Bruce Willis makes jokes.

Any other suggestions?

ETA: We're now watching a "Top Gear Challenges" DVD....

Quipping under fire is surely very manly? Also, Crank.

Nope, see Lee Marvin's stubborn refusal to banter in Point Blank. Oh, and Mikey's assessment of Crank is: "The fast and the furious with motorbikes - rubbish." I mean, he said it, not me...

...

I think he's got it confused with some other movie. Crank is Jason Statham as a mob hitmam who is injected with a poison that'll kill him when his heartrate drops. Cue hour and a half of violence, drugs, sex and whatever will keep him alive long enough to get the guys who've set him up.

A Bridge Too Far: Definitely
The Duellists: Too much talking - and costumes.
Stalingrad: Hmm.... Yes.
Das Boot: Too foreign. Reading subtitles is hard work after drinking all night.
Seven Samurai: Ditto, but the Western remake is sooooo in.

Oh! The Great Escape!

Doesn't Steve McQueen make any movie manly automatically?

Oh it's terrible. But in all the right ways. Much alcohol required before it can be "appreciated".

Seconding The Duellists. That is a fine and overlooked film. I also rather like Tears of the Sun for more contemporary manliness.

But here in the US, we have a whole TV network of manly programs for men who like programs about men. They are currently advertising a Star Wars festival, but the Bond films and the Godfather series often feature prominently there as well.

Of course that leaves out the other networks for men, but they are a bit more subtle about it.

From: [identity profile] f4f3.livejournal.com
Ha! I looked at the clip for one of the shows on Spike, and it was sponsored by SNICKERS!

The whole network is made of Lose, I'm afraid.
Star Wars is for kids, Bond stopped being manly after Sean left, and the Godfather movies are clearly too long.

TMWWBK, hmm, a bit on the long side, but admissible for having two very manly men in Connery and Caine.

Anything with clint eastwood or marlon brando in it i reckon.

OR OLIVER REED! He was so manly the testosterone practically drips off the screen! What was the one with the naked wrestling again?

Oh god, the naked wrestling. It was a Ken Russel thing, wasn't it? Women in Love?

No.

Clint gets in, but I'm not sure about Brando. Too actorly by half.

Ats the biscuit.

Unforgiven is definitely manly. I hated it.
Starship Troopers? I went on a girls night out to see that and a guy informed in shocked tones afterwards that we shouldn't have since it was BOY FILM. *snort*
Young Brando rocks! A Streetcar Named Desire just about had my hair on end with Marlon Manly Rage!

Cross of Iron yes,
Platoon, possibly,
A Fistful of Dollars is a charter member
Mad Max 2, no, because of Mad Max 3
The Terminator definitely,
And anything involving Lee Marvin is automatically manly. Except "Paint Your Wagon", which is just, well, wrong.

Soooo close to a clean sweep, caller. But no, we must disqualify Deliverance, just as we would The Shawshank Redemption and Midnight Express, for THAT scene. Sowee.

(And I'm just ignoring the nonsense about nuns and nazis. That's another type of film altogether).
