f4f3: (It's been a long day)

Am sprawled in the sofa, with tea, [livejournal.com profile] unblinkered , and various sections of the weekend papers, with "Musical Evenings With the Captain" on (guilty pleasure of Aubrey/Maturin/late 18th C chamber music) and now and again stopping to stare out of the window at the sandstone church across the way, and the green, green trees obscuring it from view.

This weekend has turned into a largely unexpected delight.

We spent Friday night at Kay and James' newish place in Canniesburn. The last time we were there they hadn't long moved in, and they were sort of rattling about a brand new building that seemed too big and to sterile for them. A few months later and the garden has been laid down, paintings have appeared on the walls, and it's feeling much more like a home that suits them (I also get the odd pleasurable shock when I see something in the house which has survived the three or four moves and almost twenty years since Kay and I lived together).

We had lovely food, very nice wine, and then we played Wii tennis. Kay and [livejournal.com profile] unblinkered  turned out to be the killers at this. Kay had never used a Wii before, and couldn't stop running towards the screen when making a volley at the net. It seemed to work for her, though.

We recovered on Saturday morning, and then [livejournal.com profile] unblinkered , Merlin and I piled the bikes into Scooby and headed for Largs, and the Cumbrae ferry. Cumbrae is a little island in the Clyde, and there is a 10 mile cycle round it which is almost a West of Scotland tradition. Most people here cycled it as kids, on school days out or family outings, and I haven't cycled it in 30 years or so. I was a little worried about Merlin being able to keep up (he's 14, you know) but with frequent water stops he was just fine, if rather tired out at the end.

We'd sort of messed up our ferry times, and ended up being half an hour late for dinner with [livejournal.com profile] billking1959 , Radka and Daniel, and Radka's sister Suzzanah and her boyfriend David. They didn't mind (and it probably helped keep my  consumption down - we were at a north Indian restaurant with a fantastic buffet - enough to slay a vampire, as Daniel said).
They came back to ours afterwards, mostly to pet Merlin, which Merlin didn't mind much.

I did my taxi run out to the airport this morning, setting them on their way back to Prague, and now it's time for a long, thoughtful afternoon of dozing on the sofa...
