It seems like ages since I've blogged about anything inconsequential and fun (shut up, you at the back) so,

Captain Britain and M13 - Vampire State
I've been enjoying the relaunch of the hero who was created as Britain's answer to Captain America with a great deal of fondness. After all, he was probably the first Marvel hero that I bought the origin issue of. He's been through the mill since then, from being given the brother-in-law treatment when Stan Lee's brother (Larry Lieber) was writing it, given a Chris Claremont make over, and written by the brightest star to pass through super hero comics when Alan Moore rebooted him in the 80's.
The new stuff is respectful to the best of that, but isn't afraid to throw in some new angles. The first two volumes set CB up with a team, the third brings on Vlad Tepes, who has designs on conquering the UK for a vampire homeland. As a bonus, he'll eradicate all religions from the islands, which he offers to Doctor Doom as a good reason for supporting him.
So: what I loved about this...
Doom asksing Dracula to spare him the racism.
The sword Excalibur choosing a woman as its new wielder. A muslim woman. Yay! (and is she really wearing the three swords of Essex on the front of her tabbard?)
The cricketing scenes. Seriously. "If he's distracted, we'll get him out with spin."
Wisdom cheating. Extensively. (and if anyone can tell me what's with the "PD" refferences, please do).
Blade taking off his sunglasses.
Meggan coming back - and harrowing hell on the way.
All in all, a very enjoyable hour or so.
