f4f3: (It's been a long day)

Left for dinner at 18.45 last night, got back at 15.00 today. That's what I call a dinner party. We were with Kay and James, who live 10 minutes away, with fellow guests Eddie and Gerry. I met E&G in my first week at secondary, making them my oldest friends who I see even semi-regularly. I met Kay in my first week at Uni, and James 15 years ago when they first got together. So lots of history there. I haven't seen Eddie since January, haven't seen Gerry for probably a year before that, but we fell very easily into conversation again.
I'll mention the food before I forget it - it was fantastic. Notionally we were having a Keith Floyd memorial dinner, so the meal was important, and it lived up to it's dedicatee. Salt cod tarts, a lovely veloutte, cassolouet, creme brule  with honey and almond ice cream. Lots of yum. Oh, and lashings of wine.
Good as the food was, the conversation was better. No sport or religion, but lots of politics. Twitter, facebook and social networking in general. Lots of stuff about media. I introduced James to Sturgeon's law (90% of anything is crap) and we had fun about learning styles. James put on his best Bufton Tufton voice to say that the trouble today is that people's attention span has gone down, in that they lost interest in anything which wasn;t interactive. I retorted that he was just complaining that people had lost the ability to sit down and shut the fuck up. A brisk half hour on the best medium for imparting information followed. The irony that I was pontificating to two teachers and a fearsome business negotiator didn't escape any of us.
Next thing we knew it was 3.30, and we called it a night.
We had a leisurely brunch, then a ramble through Garscube Estate with Merlin, and then we headed home.

Now I'm delightfully tired, but need to pull myself together to do a few chores before heading out to see the Mariinsky Orchestra at the concert hall.  Truth to tell, I'd rather stay in and put a dent on the House Season Five box set we bought yesterday, but kulchure calls.
