I think I'll like the Grassmarket. I popped out last night for a wander, and found someone doing a son et lumiere performance about Burke and Hare, and a little crowd gathered round to watch.

I treated myself to dinner in a reasonably priced French place. It looked warm, cheery and busy from the street, but when I wandered in they tried to give me a table in their basement, two floors down. I didn't fancy that, and set off back upstairs, to tell them I'd be back when they were quieter. Just as I told the maitre'de, a table beside us emptied and he waved me into that.

Much better - I was towards the back of the room, and had a view of everyone else and the Grassmarket outside. I didn't fancy a starter, so ordered the lamb shank in a honey and rosemary gravy. I ordered a kir to have while waiting (which arrived with some nuts, an excellent sign) and a pichet of red to go with my lamb. The kir was ok, but it and my Kindle kept me company until the lamb arrived. It was lovely - slow cooked, falling off the bone. I finished off with some cheese, and toddled back. I'd forgotten just how much wine there is in a pichet...

This morning I was up and out to the gym before 7. At that time, the gym is 15 minutes away, so I had enough extra time to get in the pool for 15 minutes. I sat in the sauna to do my mindfulness meditation. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy doing that - sitting in a hot box on my own seems to reduce distractions.

At 8.28 I was sitting in the car-park at work, and that's when I realised I had left my laptop back at the flat - so cue an hour of Edinburgh rush-hour traffic, and my being not quite so chilled as I was when I came out of the sauna...

There is some good viands to be had in and around the Grassmarket. I quite like the bustle of the place but you have to navigate around the stag and hen parties.

You're the second person to say that to me - I guess I'll notice this weekend.
