I had mac and cheese and lobster tonight. That's right. Lobster. America, I love you, but, really? Lobster? Mac and Cheese? Lobster?

Yet more proof that American ingenuity knows no bounds.

That's a new one for me.

Mac & cheese with hot dogs, mac & cheese with fish sticks, mac & cheese with ground beef mixed in, yes.  Lobster?  Um....

(I probably know people who would add jalapenos to mac & cheese.  I'd consider adding chipotles.)

So says somebody whose nation considers haggis to be food....

I do not understand why you are blaming a country for what, um, you chose to order.

One of my favourite suppers is mac and cheese made with bacon and onions and topped with tomatoes and parmesan cheese.

I’ve never had it with lobster.

Not bad, is it?

I was raised on Italian pasta, so mac and cheese is largely lost on me most of the time, but lobster makes it surprisingly palatable. There used to be a restaurant in my neighborhood that was basically a mac-n-cheese fast food. You could order different types of cheese and all manners of mix-ins and toppings. And as with those frozen yogurt shops, your simple mac-n-cheese soon cost as much as a real dinner. But it was very popular, especially with families.

Haggis IS a food. Lobster is a food. Macaroni Cheese is a food. Both of them together is... too much.

There seems to be a francise here called "Melted Cheese". This worries me.

In the spirit of cultural experimentation I've resolved to eat a Pop-Tart. If I do not survive, tell tales of my bravery.

I've just been reading about what the lobster fishermen of Latin America go through to provide lobster to the big American companies. Pretty grim stuff. Lobster so should be a special occasion expensive food.

I suppose it depends where the lobster comes from- Rhode Island is "The Ocean State" and I think they source their's locally. When I buy lobster in Argyll, the fishermen drop them off at Noel Prentice's tanks. Is it cheap food? Not really, at £10 or so for a medium lobster, which feeds one person, but not hideously expensive. Though I suppose you double or triple that in a restaurant.

That's right. The whole of America led me on.

(Actually, there's a lot to be said for that - this is a hell of a seductive country).

It was lovely - Very much in line with other lobster/creamy sauce combinations. Though I had to leave 75% of the pasta.
