It's raining. Not just any old rain, Argyll rain, beating down on the porch roof. It's the rain that makes landfall in Ireland on its way in from the Atlantic, bounces over the Irish Sea and drops like a billion stones here in Kintyre (sometimes, to be fair, it skips over Kintryre and hits Glasgow instead. On the weekends that I'm in Glasgow, that's what happens). I'd have a plan to come up here from Glasgow, relax at the cottage, and get in some golf, some walking, some cycling. That plan has been doubly foiled. The first thing I found out when I get to Glasgow on Wednesday morning was that the building work at the cottage hadn't finished. Well, they only had six weeks to do it. The floor has been lifted in the two bedrooms and the hall, and the contents of those rooms have been piled in the lounge, which means that the place, on Wednesday, was uninhabitable. This was, to say the least, a bit of a blow. In the afternoon I got on the phone to various people, and had the work restarted, and arranged with the insurance company that they'd pay for me to stay in a hotel.

The hotel on Wednesday night was in Bellhaven terrace, where I used to live (not in the hotel, at the other end of the terrace). It's a nicer place than I thought, and worked fine as a bridge between my optician's appointment on Wednesday and seeing the doctor and getting my haircut on Thursday. I also managed to see my dad on Thursday, which was a good thing.

I headed up to the cottage after that, and when I arrived I was astonished at the progress the local builder had made (I should say that the delay wasn't his fault, it was the drying company that hadn't finished their work). He had put down insulation and batons to support the new floor in one day, and the place didn't look as bad as I'd feared. On Friday he put the MDF subfloor down, and next week there will be wood (well, engineered wood) floor down in all three rooms. Depending on how it looks, I'll think about having the lounge and kitchen done next.

I spent Thursday and Friday nights in the Grey Gull hotel, down on the waterfront. I have some good history, and then some bad history with the place. It's in receivership right now, and being run by a capable Australian woman, who has gone a long way to correct everything that made it loss-making. The food is better, the service is miles better, and I'd recommend it to anyone coming up this way. I couldn't get a room tonight, but I've decided that the cottage is in good enough shape for me to sleep in the attic tonight without being traumatised. I may be wrong.

Next week I'll be staying through in Edinburgh, and starting my new job (for the same company, working for the same client, but it's a new job nevertheless). I'm going to be based in the centre of Edinburgh, instead of out in Edinburgh Park, which should be more pleasant. It will make it harder to get to my gym, though. I'm happy with the progress I made in America, and don't want to fall behind with fitness again. So if anyone in Edinburgh is up for a game of badminton (which I used to be good at), squash (which I was OK at) or tennis (which I'm rubbish at) let me know.

Life is still a bit strange now, a bit liminal, a bit between spaces. And my emotional state is bouncing around too. Some sadness, some happiness, both mixed and both deserving their place.

Now I'm going to gird my loins (or lions, if I can find any lions) and go out and find a gym, and then some lunch. And then write some more when I get back.

I hope all of you are warm and dry, wherever you are.

Are your new offices any where near Holyrood?

What's considered near in Edinburgh? I'm on Dundas Street, opposite the offices of a Major Bank, which I don't think is very near unless I'm driving.

That doesn’t sound near enough to meet up for lunch which is where my thinking was going.

Where abouts are you staying? Are you back in the Grassmarket for a while?
