Back on the chain gang...
Jan. 8th, 2013 11:18 amApparently the permanent job I interviewed for doesn’t exist. I’m not totally devastated by this – I think I’d more or less decided that I didn’t want it. My boss up here is looking for ways to keep me busy past the end of this month, but I’d say it’s no more than 50/50 that I’ll be in a job in February.
I think this would bother me much more if it wasn’t January, and I didn’t have such a huge hangover from 2012. I’m starting this year pretty much on a low, and I don’t have anything in mind to light the blue touch-paper. Hopefully the old ennui will dissipate by the end of this week, and I’ll start paying more attention to the world.
The rest of this week will be focussed on the huge logistical problem of hosting my first dinner party by myself for oh, ever. I have five friends coming round on Saturday, and only the vaguest idea of what to feed them. I also need to take off and nuke the flat from orbit, since a totally flat bomb crater would be much tidier than the way things are at the moment. Last night I cleared out one worktop and the table top in the kitchen, and 10 minutes later I’d filled it all back up with the debris from my new coffee machine (yes, it’s lovely, and no, having four coffees last night to test it out was not my best idea ever).
My social life is indeed starting to judder into some sort of action again. I did spend a lot of time relaxing over the holidays, and at the end of December, but most of it was done on my own. Nothing wrong with that, by and large, but I was lousy company. Apart from the old friends I’ll see at the weekend, I’ve made plans to see friends on Thursday and then next Monday and Thursday. In theory, I’m going away with my brother the following weekend to commit decoration in Ardrishaig. Unfortunately the early start we need to get means that I won’t be seeing Martin Stephenson and the Daintees at Oran Mor that Friday night. Yah boo sucks. Oh, and I won’t be eating at the Bengali Tandoori in Ardrishaig, since they served me Chicken Tartar last Friday.
OK, back to work, which is managing to be busy and unproductive at the same time today…
