Ok, ladies and gentlemen, lads oh pairts and heilan lassies (and, of course, all of you furth of Scotland) it has been borne in on me that Scotland, when Independent, may well require a new anthem. Nothing against the House of Windsor (who will all be up against the wall, come the Glorious Day, except, maybe, Princess Anne) but we'll be needing our version of those great Commonwealth Anthems, such as "Advance Australia Fair" and, um, others.

I intend creating a competition, where the question can be decided by, well, by the most discerning, intelligent, fair favoured and witty folk on Earth, my f-list. To that end, I need nominations.

Send me your suggestions for the ditty that will be played on a hundred foreign (playing) fields, which politicians will have to learn, or pretend to learn, the words of, and which will tinkle from a million tinny music boxes sold along The Royal Mile. Preferably, send me the entrant plus a video, and, if enough suggestions come flooding in, we'll have Eurovision style voting. Or, possibly, a poll.

Nominations in comments, please - remember: vote early, vote often.

I started the ball rolling with "Scotland's Story" by the Proclaimers, and [livejournal.com profile] danieldwilliam of this parish has indicated a fondness for this, "Dignity", by Deacon Blue:

Lovely as the studio version is, to me it will always feel more like this:

You are forgetting the fundamental rule that countries emancipating themselves from the rule of the House of Mountbatten-Windsor invariably reject all pre-existing anthem possibilities in favour of some especilly composed, dreadfully dull ditty like "Advance Australia Fair". It is also important to remember that if the country has two official languages; English and Glaswegian for example, then the words must be completely different in both. See "O Canada".

I'm hoping to avoid that - although if Liz Lochhead collaborates with Peter Maxwell Davies, I'd be happy to see if they come up with something I can whistle...
