The 90 minute commute to and from Glastonbury turned out not to be too bad, once I got the route sorted out. I kept away from the busiest road, and drove through miles and miles and miles of New England trees. I only realised that I'm in New England when [livejournal.com profile] ameliaeve explained that no, NE isn't a state, it's a collection of states. Oops. So far I've been in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts on this trip. That's not as impressive as it sounds - you can drive through any two of them doing shopping.

On Saturday I'll get the train to New York, which will presumably add a State or two to the tally. Which is good.

I've done useful work this week, I think, and so I've enjoyed it more. I'm now starting to think about what I'll do when I get back. Various balls are in the air, but almost all of the people who should be catching them are on holiday right now. It's going to be a last minute thing, I know.

In other news, I bought a new carry on bag today. Bringing my laptop rucksack instead of a carry on turned out to be a stupid idea, if you remember, when my main bag turned out to be 5kg over limit. This one is black, and was reduced by 40%, then 10% then 15% in the Macy's sale. I gave up trying to work out how much that was off the original price and just bought it. It may get an outing on the trip to New York this weekend.

I've also been on a book-buying spree. As well as the three signed Matt Scudder books I ordered at Lawrence Block's e-bay store, I bought two new Brookmyres tonight on Kindle. One is a book of short stories by CHRISTOPHER Brookmyre, and the other a detective novel by CHRIS Brookmyre, This seems to be a deliberate marketing strategy. I didn't particularly enjoy the first Chris B book (I didn't hate it, just didn't love it) so it will be interesting to see how I like this one.

Before that, though, I'll finish The Righteous Mind, by Jonathon Haidt, which I'm thoroughly enjoying. As a matter of fact, I'll be off to bed to read it now...

Can you go into the city Friday night?

I've already booked my train for Saturday morning :(
Can't really afford two hotel nights, either.

Wah-Wah. Charge to the company for all the days you're commuting instead of staying in a hotel? :-D

I'm charging them for everything :)

But my Amtrak ticket is for Saturday, and would cost me $100+ to change it now.

What's the new marketing strategy then; are the publishers trying to sell Chris(topher) as the new Iain (M.) Banks?

I think Chris is the straight detective novelist, without the overt humour of Christopher (leaving him with the freedom to head off into SF, as he did in Pandemonium).
