Difficult position for those interested in re-distributing power and re-designing power systems when offered a position in the Lords.

It's an illegimate chamber, even by the lights of modern thinking on who does and ought to hold power, but it's the only one we've got and sure as eggs are eggs the other side would stuff it with their own folk without thinking twice.

Sitting in that chamber only reinforces its legitimacy - especially when your own party has had adequate time and inadequate appetite to reform it.
