I have tried reading two of Mitchell's books but I just can't make myself read them. He somehow does nothing for me. Kind of like Mieville.

I haven't read the Eyre Affair but have enjoyed all the other books in the series.

Not so much that I didn't like the Eyre Affaire as that I couldn't finish it - same as Jonathon Strange.

I can concur with regard to Fforde. IT takes me ages to finish his books - they fail to hold me and I tend to treat them as space fillers, reading a few chapters between different books. Anything else gets tedious.

Strange & Norrell didn't affect me that way. I half thought it might have something to do with me emotional tiredness as I started it right after dadaji's death.

I can S&N as being comforting - I know that I turn to Flashy when things seem grey and dull.
