"That's Mr Buddy Guy, Sir."
Jun. 26th, 2008 11:17 pmOff to see a legend tonight. As Bill Murray introduces him in the clip below, "The pump house in the water tower at the heart of the City of Chicago, Mr Buddy Guy."
An amazing show, and for once the Academy was the perfect venue, with its big stage and packed balcony, and old picture-house aesthetics, Buddy wore it like a glove. For a guy of 71, he puts on a pretty good show, starting loud "So's you know I'm here", running through a really, truly jaw-dropping litany of styles, and going walkabout. I felt a bit put off by this, since we were in the balcony, and once he'd wandered back towards the bar we couldn't see him, only hear him. I felt a bit better about it when he appeared on the balcony, still soloing, and walked down the aisle to the front row to play to the crowd below. unblinkered, in the aisle seat, was near enough to touch him (although she resisted the temptation).
A great gig.
