So, today I moved out of the Hilton (I was fed up doing my Bill Murray impersonation, and Scarlett didn't show).

I went down to pick up a car at Avis, having signed up for the entirely acceptable Ford Blah. They didn't have one, so I got bumped up to a new Subaru Outback, which is a four by four and what I think they call an SUV. Me like (usual interval of getting in the wrong door, trying to use my left foot to do something, and trying to drive in the out door of the parking garage.

Drove it to the flat (sorry, apartment) and it's FUCKING HUGE. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, easily 20 foot high. Probably closer to 30'.

The internet works, it has a pool and gym, if I can find a nearby supermarket to fill my FUCKING HUGE American fridge, I might never go home again.

Yesterday I was one of the little people, scraping by in the Hilton, and now I'm a one percenter...

I am envious of your ginormous apartment and humongous fridge. *sigh*

An Outback is:

A conversion or maybe a station wagon. SUVs sit higher up off the ground than the outback. My car is also a conversion. It's for people who camp, or wish they camped, but don't want a truck.

A stereotypically lesbian car. Like, buy some hiking boots from REI and a pair of carpenter jeans, and get a biggish dog, and everyone will be all like... uh...

Of course, stereotypes being what they are... the lovely lovely couple on my parents' street drive a Mini and a VW Beetle convertible. So I guess that suggests maybe stereotypes are stupid. They do have a gorgeous brindled mastiff called Hank, though.

It's kind of Land Rover, Honda CRV shaped. I don't want a truck, since then I'll need to eat Yorkies all the time.

I've always wanted to be a lesbian. I like women a lot. Are Minis and Beetles also stereotypically gay? I had a lovely red Beetle, and I really like the new Mini Roadster...

Oh, and look for a mail from me.

I miss conversion vans! These days, an Outback is probably considered more a "crossover" than either a station wagon or an SUV. It's in between the two, though it certainly has station wagon roots. It's also technically an all-wheel-drive vehicle rather than a 4x4, though the difference escapes me at the moment.

I seriously considered the Subarus when I was looking to lease AWD cars, but they're better suited to people who like carting around hockey gear than people. Also, too expensive compared to Hondas and not as fun or fancy as Audis.

Most of the lesbians I know seem to drive big pickup trucks instead. :-)

I'm a big Subaru fan, but I haven't driven this stile of Outback before. My last three cars have been WRX Imprezas, rally cars by any other name and huge fun to drive on Scotland's twisty roads (that's mine in the user pic). Big enough for golf clubs, or dogs, but not for bikes unless you fold down the back seats. I wasn't expecting to get this one, and I'm not finding it easy to drive. Cornering is always a problem when you're turning the wrong way into it, and my road positioning goes to pot when I'm driving on the right. It wasn't a huge problem with the Ford Blah, but this is enough bigger to be giving me the collywobbles as I take corners in town.

If I had any money whatsoever I would be on a plane like a whippet to come and see this!

You'll need to settle for the pictures I intend to post when I get a wide angled lens for my iPhone.
